In collaboration with the Arab-American Civil Rights League and ACCESS, we are pleased to invite you to join us for an evening training on VAWA self-petitions and U visas, geared toward attorneys interested in pro bono work. The training will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at ACCESS Community Health and Research Center in the second floor conference room, 6450 Maple Street, Dearborn, MI 48126
Training participants will be introduced to the two major forms of immigration relief available to immigrant victims of crime and survivors of domestic and sexual violence -- VAWA self-petitions and U visas. Many battered immigrants remain trapped in abusive relationships because of threats of deportation and/or separation from their children. Abusers often use these threats to maintain power and control in the relationship. Our immigration law provides relief for many of these individuals. Participants will be trained to identify eligible applicants, spot issues, prepare applications, and represent applicants. Following the training, interested participants can accept a pro bono referral with support and mentoring from MIRC.
The training will be facilitated by Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) attorney Ruby Robinson.
