POSITION: The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) is seeking an outstanding attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy to assume a role on our legal team as a Staff Attorney in our Ypsilanti office. This position will focus primarily on (1) representing unaccompanied immigrant children in removal proceedings and (2) a general immigration legal services for the Detroit metro area. The successful candidate will be responsible for handling an individual caseload, identifying and developing potential new cases and litigation opportunities related to immigration advocacy and civil rights, and engaging in community advocacy. Advocacy tasks will include outreach, legal research and writing, negotiation, collaborating with community groups, training legal interns and law clerks, document preparation, policy analysis as well as state and federal litigation and appeals. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MIRC is a comprehensive legal resource and advocacy center for Michigan’s immigrant communities with three core pillars: (1) access to justice for immigrants, (2) systemic advocacy for immigrant community advancement, and (3) community education and engagement. MIRC has offices in Ypsilanti, Detroit Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. MIRC is part of Michigan Statewide Advocacy Services (MSAS) administered by the Michigan Advocacy Program. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Michigan, qualified to be admitted by waiver, or able to take the next Michigan bar exam. Applicants must possess excellent communication, collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills and be equipped to balance a heavy caseload with other responsibilities. We’re also looking for candidates with a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of immigrants or other persons in poverty through lived or learned experience. Applicants who are able to communicate effectively in Spanish will receive priority.
BENEFITS: Salary is from $47,000 depending on experience and includes excellent health, disability, and fringe benefits.
